Every drawing begins with a secret: nothing is as complicated as it first appears. In my classroom, a lion is a circle before it is brave, a house is a square before it becomes a home, and a child’s uncertainty becomes a line—simple, imperfect, and full of possibility. We don’t chase perfection; we build understanding. I teach children to see the world as a collection of quiet shapes waiting to be discovered. A curve, a triangle, a rectangle—these are not limitations, but clues. When we rearrange them, stretch them, soften them, something magical happens: the ordinary transforms into the recognizable, and the recognizable into something personal. This process gives children more than drawing skills. It gives them a way to break down challenges, to trust their eyes, and to believe that even the most complex things can be approached step by step. Art, in my teaching, is not about copying what is seen—it is about uncovering what is hidden beneath. When a child realizes they can turn a simple shape into something real, they are not just learning to draw. They are learning how to see, how to think, and how to create without fear.
